The Italian Shipping Academy, founded in 2005 and recognized as an ITS Foundation in 2011, is a body financed by public institutions which issues qualifications on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Education for the national tertiary education. The mission of the Academy is to provide specialized training aimed at occupations with high professional and technological contents, based on the needs of the industry, and in particular in the strategic areas of Maritime and Logistics. 

The Italian Shipping Academy owns two seats based in Genoa. Technical courses dedicated to navigation officers are held in its headquarter in Genoa, while at Villa Figoli des Geneys – an historical villa based 20km far from Genoa city centre – are held the courses for on-board services for passengers.The Italian Shipping Academy is the only Italian maritime education and training academy member of the IAMU – International Association of Maritime Universities, and it boasts several memorandum of understanding with other institutions: World Maritime UniversitySolent UniversityPlymouth University, BCA College, GIME.

Deck Cadets

The Deck Cadet assists the Officers in the ship movements and in its government. In the field of Deck the characterizing activities are: techniques and methods for route and voyage planning, conduction of the ship, organization of resources   and   staff, cargo handling. During the educational phase, the Deck Cadet is supported by Deck officers in the performance of his duties, onboard vessels having tonnage pairs or advanced to 500 GT.

The students of the courses will embark on the ships of the partner companies (Pax Cruises, Ro-Ro Pax, Cargo, Offshore). The composition of the class and the assignment of embarkations is at the discretion of the Academy. The start of the course is subject to approval by the funders and the achievement of a minimum of 20 students.


The course is structured in teaching modules (blended, distance and presence learning) for approx. 1,350 hours in total and embarkation periods with the qualification of Deck Cadet for a total of 12 months (2920 hours). The last period in the Academy is dedicated to the preparation of the unified ITS/CoC Deck Officer exam. 

Engine Cadets

The Engine Cadet assists the officers in the governance of the ship’s engine room. The typical duties of the professional are the management and the maintenance of the propulsion equipment, production of the energy for onboard services and their management (electricity, air conditioning, cargo handling, mooring and anchoring, personnel (organization). During the training time the Engine Cadet is supported by the Engineer Officers for the performance of his duties. 

 

The students of the courses will embark on the ships of the partner companies (Pax cruises, Ro-Ro Pax, Cargo, Offshore). The composition of the class and the assignment of embarkations is at the discretion of the Academy. The courses, carried out in Italian and in English, are divided into Teaching Units, that concur so that the student achieves the competences provided by the STCW Convention, Table A-III/1. 

 

To the term of the formative path in the Academy the student has acquired the competences, all the necessary certifications and the obligatory period of boarding in order to support the unified examination for the achievement of the ITS Higher Technical qualifications for the mobility of people and goods – Management of equipment and facilities on board / IMO Coc for the professional qualification of Engineer Officer.

Environmental Cadets

 

The Environmental Cadet Officer is an Environmental Compliance Officer in training. The Environmental Cadet Officer learns how to become the shipboard expert on environmental operations & compliance. He/she will oversee and assist the company in the implementation of environmental policies, procedures and systems and ensures the compliance of every ship with all applicable environmental laws, including environmental quality standards, marine regulations, current maritime environmental issues and Company Policy. He/she will also administer the on-board environmental training of the whole Crew.

 

Overall 1.200 teaching hours and 1.440 on board training hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. After the education and training period and the successful passing of an exam, FAIMM (The Italian Shipping Academy) releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

Other Technical Courses

 

Logistic technician – Overall 1.200 teaching hours and 800 training-on-the-job hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. Target group: from 18 to 26 years old applicants. After the education and training period and the successful passing of an exam, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

 

Rail transport technician – Overall 1.400 teaching hours and 600 training-on-the-job hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. Target group: from 18 to 26 years old applicants. After the education and training period and the successful passing of an exam, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

 

Ship builders – Overall 880 teaching hours and 920 training-on-the-job hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. Target group: from 18 to 29 years old applicants. After the education and training period and the successful passing of an exam, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

Passengers Services 

 

Ship Purser – Overall 1.000 teaching hours and 1.000 on board training hours, with alternated modules, for a two-years course. After the education and training time and the successful passing of an exam, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

 

On board chef – Overall 800 teaching hours and 2.000 on board training hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. After the education and training period and the successful passing of the examination, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

 

On board pastry chef – Overall 800 teaching hours and 2.000 on board training hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. After the education and training period and the successful passing of the examination, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

 

On board multimedia technician – Overall 900 teaching hours and 900 on board training hours, with alternated modules, for a total duration of two years. After the education and training period and the successful passing of the final examination, FAIMM releases a diploma recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, valuable at 5th EQF level.

Ente Radar - Italian Shipping Academy

Ente Radar – Italian Shipping Academy is a Training Centre accredited by the Italian Authorities which provides technical and specific skills through education and trainings in the interest of navigation safety, SAR activities and professional updating of maritime personnel. Its courses are provided in compliance with Italian law and the STCW Convention. 

 

 

In addition to its traditional training courses for Deck and Engine Officers, Ente Radar – Italian Shipping Academy has been also recently accredited by the Italian Ministry of Transports (MIT) pursuant to the executive decree of November 16, 2017 for carrying out education and training courses for maritime personnel in service on vessels subject to the IGF Code.

STCW IGF BASIC & ADVANCED COURSES

The objective of these courses is to provide trainees with practical guidance and information to gain the knowledge, understanding and proficiencies required to achieve the objective of the learning outcomes to demonstrate their competence in safety for ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels, as set out in table A-V/3-1 of the STCW Code. A trainee successfully completing these courses will gain knowledge and skills to contribute to safe operation of ships subject to the IGF Code. In addition to the above reported STCW Training Courses, through the two different simulators (Wärtsilä and GTT technologies)at its HQ, Ente Radar provides further customized training courses according to the industry needs, such as:

IMSSEA – International Maritime Safety Security and Environment Academy

IMSSEA is an international maritime education and training center specialized in the training of senior specialist maritime personnel in various aspects of shipping and related fields. Part of the Italian Shipping Academy, its courses are designed to be responsive to the needs of public sector departments and ensure the effective exercise of flag, port and coastal state jurisdiction.

 

 

IMSSEA has been created in cooperation with IMO and is the result of the joined efforts by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Province of Genoa to reactivate in Italy a centre of excellence capable of providing advanced education, training and technical advice.
